Monday Health for Students

Mar 25, 2020 | class story

By Jan Davoren

I am currently teaching a day of Health lessons to our Year 1, 2, and 3 students.

Much of this term has been about identities and achievements of students and recognizing the achievements of others and also personal health. Physical and other changes that occur as students grow older were other topics.

Last week we had a look at what we drink. We observed labels and in particular the sugar content of some drinks. The naturally occurring sugar in milk and fruit juice added to the questions and discussions as did some of the labelling which worked on per 100mls and not the serving size.

As we read the grams of sugar and converted it to teaspoons it was interesting that many students already knew a can of Coke had approximately 10 spoons of added sugar. They all knew their bottles of water were the best choice from our samples.
