Transition Class
A Transition Class enables us to cater for the physical, social and literacy needs of new Reception children by blending the methodology of kindergarten with that of school.
It enables strong communication links to be built up with the kindergarten staff as they deal consistently with the same teacher and alleviates some of the anxieties of the children and parents knowing where the new classroom will be and who their teacher will be. The Transition Class takes in all new Reception children and the children stay in the class from between one term to one year, depending on their needs.
How does it work?
During the term before school entry, students from the local kindergarten, Frieda Corpe Kindergarten at Port Noarlunga (just 100 metres from our school Ph: 08 8384 2108) and other local kindergartens visit the school as part of the Transition Program.
Students begin school in our Transition Class and move onto a feeder class usually after one term, depending on individual ability and the number of new Reception students beginning school.
Therefore, for the whole year all the new Receptions will go into the Transition Class and will be transitioned on when they are ready.
In the following year the children from the Transition Class will form the basis of the Reception/Year 1 classes.
Students selected to move into a feeder class will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher and class (where applicable) as often as possible.
We believe that the early years of schooling are vital and the Transition Class is structured to provide a strong educational base that will allow for a programme that is repetitive and fun. The Transition Class also allows greater continuity between the kindergarten and school and ensures that change does not affect student learning.
Students can be enrolled at the school on the first day of the term following their fifth birthday, but are not under compulsion to attend until their sixth birthday.
Parents need to fill out an enrolment form prior to students starting school.
